Some General Guidelines:

When should I go to the Emergency Department?

Please bring yourself to the Emergency Department or call 911 when you strongly feel like you might hurt yourself (suicidal) or hurt someone else (homicidal). Further, seek emergency assistance if you are hearing voices or seeing things that are not there (hallucinating). If you are withdrawing from alcohol or controlled substances like benzodiazepans (e.g. Xanax) or opiates (eg Heroin, Vicadin), please go to the E.D. and ask to be evaluated for the Detox program.

When should I call my family physician?

Consider calling for advice and/or making an appointment with your family physician if you are experiencing any of the following for 1 week or more: low energy, sleep disturbance (too much or too little), appetite disturbance (too much or too little), crying spells, panic attacks (e.g. fear and bodily upset), any other other major change in your usual functioning.

When should I call a psychiatrist?

Some reasons to call a psychiatrist include if: you already have seen a family doctor and he/she has referred you to one, you have had similar symptoms in the past and have been previously medically cleared by an internist, and/or you have found psychiatric help in the past to be helpful.
