Dr. Jorge L. Gardyn is the Division Chief of the Occupational and Corporate Medicine program at the Nassau University Medical Center. He is a 1984 graduate of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara and has a long history with the Nassau University Medical Center.

Dr. Gardyn completed both his Rotating Internship (Fifth Pathway) and Internal Medicine Residency at this facility in 1988, then named the Nassau County Medical Center, under the auspices of Stony Brook University of Medicine. After residency Dr. Gardyn worked as an Emergency Room physician at Massapequa General Hospital for several years before going into private practice.

In 1990 he began an Internal Medicine practice in Massapequa, and several years later started a company called Island Occupational Medical Resources, PC (IOMR). This company was founded on the premise of bringing high quality on-site medical examinations on a cost effective basis to the Fire Service of Long Island.

The role of IOMR expanded as years went on into a full service Occupational Company meeting the medical needs of the private corporate and public world. In the years since starting IOMR, Dr. Gardyn’s role in the Fire and EMS community of Nassau and Suffolk County has expanded. He has written numerous articles on Heart Disease and the Fire Service and has lectured extensively on the merits of running a quality Medical Program.

Today, Dr. Gardyn serves on the board of the Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Council of Nassau County, is the Medical Director for the Nassau County EMS Academy, the Nassau County Fire Service Academy, and the Vocational Educational Extension Board License Practical Nursing Program.

Dr. Gardyn has also been active over the years in the teaching of medical students, residents, nurse practitioner students and physician assistant students, and has clinical academic appointments to Stony Brook University School of Medicine, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Touro College of Health Sciences.

In 2007 Dr. Gardyn renewed his affiliation with the Nassau University Medical Center by beginning a joint affiliation between IOMR and the hospital in the creation of a Division of Occupational and Corporate Medicine. The goal of this Division was to reach out to the public and private sector of both Nassau and Suffolk county and offer a cost effective and quality based medical program to fit the needs of the corporate community. This combined venture has exceeded the expectations of both parties and has elevated this new Division to a new found level of respect within our community.

Some of the accomplishments of this Division include:
  • The Creation of the Injury Management Team at NUMC. This core group utilizes concurrent case management      and efficient medical control of Worker’s Compensation cases as its basis.
  • This program resulted in significant savings to the hospital in Lost Work Time and serves as the basis model for      outsourced Worker’s Compensation care.
  • Establishment of a Quantitative Fit Test Program that has tested and educated over 2500 employees.
  • Improved services to the Employee Health Program that has resulted in tripling the volume of patients seen in      this area since we began.
  • Established a Medical Review Officer Certified Urine Drug testing program for NUMC’s pre-employment      program.
  • Initiated a Urine Drug Testing Program for clients of the Occupational Medicine Program.
  • Established a Breath Alcohol testing program utilized under Department of Transportation guidelines servicing      our Occupational Medicine clients.
  • Responsible for organizing , planning, and running the Community Based H1N1 Vaccination Program in      partnership with the Nassau County Department of Health, Fall 2009.

  • In short the Division of Occupational and Corporate Medicine is embarking on a structured and strategic program to place itself on the forefront of the Occupational Field on Long Island. With the addition of the Hofstra Medical School, we are looking forward to becoming an integral part of this new and exciting adventure in comprehensive medical care on Long Island.
