Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System is pleased to announce Lynn A. Schaefer, Ph.D., ABPP, clinical neuropsychologist and director of neuropsychology at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), has been elected president of the neuropsychology division of the New York State Psychological Association for 2011. “I am delighted to congratulate Dr. Schaefer on this prestigious appointment. As president of the Neuropsychology Division of the New York State Psychological Association, I am confident she will excel and assist in bringing a greater focus to the issues of education, training and practice of neuropsychology,” said Gianelli. A neuropsychologist is a psychologist with expertise in the applied science of brain-behavior relationships. Clinical neuropsychologists use this knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and/or remediation of patients across the lifespan with neurological, medical, and psychiatric conditions, as well as other cognitive disorders (i.e., of memory, attention, language, or perception). The New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) is affiliated with the American Psychological Association and has 16 divisions, each with their own leadership board. The neuropsychology division works to advance the interests of neuropsychologists around the issues of education, training and practice in New York State, as well as educate the public about the role of neuropsychologists. Dr. Schaefer is director of neuropsychology in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at NUMC. She earned her Ph.D. in 2002 from the City University of New York Graduate Center, in the Neuropsychology Subprogram at Queens College, and is board certified in clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She was previously a Senior Psychologist at the Rusk Institute of New York University Medical Center, where she also held a faculty appointment. Dr. Schaefer currently holds academic appointments as assistant professor of clinical physical medicine and rehabilitation at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine and is an adjunct assistant professor of psychiatry at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.
