Special Care For Hiv-Positive Women And
Their Children
Women comprise the most rapidly growing segment
of the HIV-infected population in the United States.
It is here on Long Island that there is the highest
number of HIV-positive women of any suburban area
in the U.S. At Nassau University Medical Center,
we know that HIV-positive women need special care.
We have designed a program to focus on the many
roles women play-confidante, significant other,
friend, and mother. We provide many important services
that support the well-being of our patients, so
that they can continue to care for the well-being
of others who are important to them.
The Women's Comprehensive HIV Services Initiative
is a multidisciplinary program accessible through
the Primary Care HIV Clinics. Clinics are held on
Monday and Wednesday mornings and all day Thursday.
An HIV-positive woman can expect to come in for
her gynecological and primary HIV medical care through
the clinic, meet with her case manager for coordination
of services and referrals, and obtain counseling
and coping skills from caring psychologists. All
within one visit! And of course, we are here to
assist at other times, as well
Social, Psychological, And Educational Support
The Primary Care HIV Clinics provide each patient
with a complete assessment of social and psychological
needs. Individualized case management services coordinate
medical, psychological, and social services and
arrange for necessary referrals.
Support services and educational programs allow
women, their partner/ spouse and family to express
their feelings and share experiences with counselors,
other HIV-positive women, and significant others.
This initiative provides women with educational
workshops and materials to improve their understanding
of their disease, and to encourage them to become
knowledgeable of treatment options and other valuable
HIV services.
