LI Weight Reduction Center

Almost everyone has tried to lose weight at some point in their lives. But if you or someone you know is among the many chronically severely overweight (100 pounds or more), who have tried dieting, exercising, behavior modification and group support, you might be interested in the services of the Long Island Surgical Weight Reduction CenterSM.

What is the Long Island Surgical Weight Reduction Center?

The Long Island Surgical Weight Reduction Center offers surgery (called gastric stapling or bariatric surgery) as an option for those who are severely overweight, or those with medical conditions that have worsened with increasing weight. We've brought together a highly trained team of surgeons, nutritionists, internists, psychiatrists, plastic surgeons and technicians to provide complete care for patients. These experts supply constant individualized service in a private setting.

The Center, which is coordinated by the Department of Surgery, sees clients on an outpatient basis for consultation and evaluation. This includes a very detailed education about bariatric surgery done directly by a surgeon. Patients' questions are answered comprehensively and clearly.

Special Services Available At The Center
  • Individualized Service- All aspects of care are coordinated through the Center, allowing for one-to-one service. We walk our patients through the hospital process in order to minimize confusion.
  • Nutritional Counseling- Patients meet regularly with a certified nutritionist who provides counseling before and after surgery.
  • Monthly Support Group Meetings- Meetings are interactive sessions led by patients in which pertinent issues are discussed. Guest speakers are invited as determined by participants. Staff members are also present to assist patients.
  • Quarterly Newsletter- The Center's newsletter examines issues affecting our patients. It also provides advice and support. affecting our patients. It also provides nutritional advice and support.
Who is a Candidate for Weight Reduction Surgery?

Not everyone is a candidate for weight reduction surgery. Patients seeking therapy for severe obesity should first attempt non-surgical programs - including a dietary regimen, exercise, behavior modification and support groups. If these types of treatment have been tried and failed, surgery may be considered for well-informed and motivated individuals who are at least 100 pounds overweight. Candidates should realize that surgery will not produce miracles. They must play a significant role in the success of the operation. High calorie foods will still be restricted and will be replaced with high protein foods. Vitamins, calcium and a lifetime of monitoring will be required, along with a strong commitment to lose weight and remain healthy.

What Else Should I Know?
