Department of Pediatrics
The goal of our training program is to allow resident
physicians to attain excellence in primary care
and develop into complete pediatricians who are
able to pursue sub-specialty training, if desired.
Our 3 year program offers 10 categorical pediatric
positions each year. Residents are exposed to
a wealth of clinical experience through our up-weighted
Primary Care Program encompassing Continuity Care
sessions, Ambulatory programs, Inpatient services,
didactic teaching and Research pursuits in both
the clinical and basic science areas.
The Pediatric Department has a spacious, well-equipped
ambulatory facility where continuity care services
and 25 specialty care sessions are provided. A
separate Pediatric Emergency Room is staffed with
residents supervised by full-time pediatricians,
24 hours/day. The 18th floor of the hospital houses
the inpatient services for children and adolescents
up to 20 years of age with an average daily census
of 24 patients. A six bed Pediatric Critical Care
service is located in ICU-3 on the 2nd floor of
the DCB. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has
38 beds and the newborn nursery has 40 bassinets
located in the Perinatal Center on the 3rd floor
of the hospital tower.
Medical students from the State University of
New York at Stony Brook and osteopathic students
from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine
do their 3rd year Clerkships and 4th year sub-internships
and electives on the pediatric service.
The first year of training is devoted to developing
the Residents skills and procedures and establishing
a foundation upon which to build. The PL-1 resident
acts as the patient's primary care physician under
the supervision of senior residents and attending
staff. During the PL-2 and PL-3 years the resident
is assigned increased supervisory and teaching
responsibilities. Residents spend more than 20%
of their time seeing patients for continuity care.
Residents are well supervised with attending rounds
7 days/week on all the inpatient services and
by each patient seen in the ambulatory areas presented
to and discussed with an attending before being
discharged.
The faculty consists of 24 full-time pediatricians,
4 nurse practitioners, 4 research scientists and
many voluntary staff. All the major subspecialties
are represented. Many support specialties such
as pediatric radiology and pediatric surgery (
general, urologic, orthopedic, and neurologic
) contribute to the training program. At least
1 hour a day is set aside for didactic learning
by faculty directed conferences (resident lecture
series, grand rounds, journal club, morbidity
& mortality, etc. ).
Inquiries about the Pediatric Residency Training
Program should be addressed to Stephen P. Katz,
M.D.. Program Director. Applications are accepted
through the Electronic Residency Application System
( ERAS )
