What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

You may have heard about a new surgical technique called laparoscopic surgery. This 'key-hole surgery' is performed using special long instruments inserted into the abdomen through small skin incisions called ports. The operation is then performed using a laparoscope, which is a telescopic camera that provides a magnified picture of internal organs. This technique results in faster patient recovery, less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay, fewer wound complications and a better cosmetic outcome - in short, patient satisfaction.

What is the Long Island Center for Advanced Laparosopy?

The Long Island Center for Advanced Laparoscopy (LICAL) is a surgical center focused on laparoscopic treatment of surgical diseases. A specially trained surgeon directs the center. LICAL provides comprehensive services in minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures.

What Conditions can be Treated with Laparoscopic Surgery?
  • Gall stones and bile duct stones.
  • Groin and abdominal hernias.
  • Reflux disease (heartburn).
  • Diseases of the esophagus.
  • Bowel and colon disease.
  • Removal of diseased organs, such as the spleen, adrenal glands or kidneys.
  • Operations for morbid obesity.
  • Diagnostic operations to determine the cause of abdominal pain, inflammation, tumors or adhesions.
Who is a Candidate for Laparoscopic Surgery?

Many patients with conditions that need to be treated surgically may be candidates for a laparoscopic procedure. Such surgery is rapidly becoming a standard treatment. Your surgeon will discuss with you a treatment plan based on your diagnosis and careful testing.

What Can I Expect If I Go To See A Surgeon?

Your surgeon will interview you and examine you to determine if your condition can be helped by surgery. If you are a candidate for laparoscopic surgery, your surgeon will go over the details with you. Patients are generally admitted on the morning of surgery. Blood tests will be done beforehand and an anesthesiologist will interview you to determine whether you are in good condition for anesthesia.
