In addition to stipends, housing on the grounds is subsidized by the Medical Center and is available by application. The housing includes studio, one, two and three-bedroom, air-conditioned garden apartments that can accommodate 152 families. The complex is interlaced with lawns, gardens, and play areas.

Rental fees, which include utilities other than personal telephone and cable television, are nominal. As housing facilities are limited in quantity, a living-out allowance is provided to those house officers who cannot be accommodated. The Housing Department is made aware of housing opportunities in the surrounding area and will share this information with those members of the house staff that cannot be accommodated in on-campus facilities.

Following are some answers to frequently asked questions regarding housing availability at NUMC. Unfortunately, there are not enough apartments to ensure that every resident receives an apartment. Therefore, apartment assignment is based purely on the order in which your application is received, apartment style availability and your family size. A single person can only move into a studio apartment. 1 Bedrooms are for married couples with no children, or a single person with 1 child. 2 Bedrooms are for married, 1 child or single 2 children. 3 Bedrooms are for married 2 or more children or single more than 2 children. There are no exceptions. You must provide to the housing office a copy of your Marriage Certificate and children's Birth Certificate if applicable.

The only occupants allowed to move into an apartment are your spouse and children. No other family members are permitted to live on campus. For example, a resident requested a 1 BR, because he and his sister were moving in together. The sister is not permitted to live on campus. If you are getting married or a child is being born, or your immediate family is moving here more than three months after July 1, the upgrading request cannot be completed until after the event commences, and can only be done so on a very limited basis.

You will be notified in writing in early May if you will be assigned an apartment and will receive further information regarding details about lease requirements and move dates. Apartments will not be available before July 1 and may not be ready until July 15, so you may need to make temporary arrangements during the first few days of your residency.

All applications for housing (including upgrades for current residents) must be made online via this application. I will need copies of all necessary documents before the final assignment can be made. Documentation can be sent via E-mail to ccarbone@numc.edu, via fax to 516-572-5693 or by regular mail to NUMC Housing Office ~ 2201 Hempstead Turnpike ~ Mailbox SB54 ~East Meadow, NY 11554. Requests for housing will not be honored if submitted by means other than this online application. If you have any questions, please call the Housing Office at 516-572-6900 during normal business hours.

The house staff may elect Major Medical insurance plans. The hospital pays the premium for individual policies for those who are single and pays the premium for family policies for those who are married. Members of the house staff are entitled to hospitalization when hospitalized at the Nassau University Medical Center. The County of Nassau assumes the malpractice liability for all members of the house staff employed by the Nassau University Medical Center.
