About NUMC
The Nassau University Medical Center opened on July
15, 1935, as a small 200-bed, general hospital surrounded
by vast acres of farmland in the rural community
of East Meadow, NY. It served a very localized population
and during its first year of operation, fewer than
150 people a day were treated as inpatients, 560
persons were seen in the emergency room and 813
visited the ambulatory patient clinics. The hospital
staff numbered only 330.
There is quite a difference in the Nassau University
Medical Center of today. Operated by the newly
created Nassau Health Care Corporation and governed
by a Board of Directors, today's medical center
is a 1,200-bed health care system which includes
a 530-bed tertiary care, teaching hospital, an
585-bed skilled nursing facility, a number of
community health centers and a 40-bed correctional
center infirmary. It is affiliated with the Health
Sciences Center of the State University of New
York at Stony Brook.
Today, more than 80,000 people annually are treated in the
emergency room and 178,000 in its more than 85 specialty clinics.
Its staff totals more than 4,000.
